Doherty finishes fourth in Dublin Marathon 31.10.07

CARNDONAGH athlete Karol Doherty was the top Inishowen competitor in the Dublin City Marathon on Monday when he finished an excellent fourth place in the wheelchair section.
A relative novice to the marathon, this was only his second attempt at the distance and he improved his personal best by over 16 minutes by finishing in 2 hours and 19 minutes. The Letterkenny IT student made his debut at the marathon last May where he powered his way to 2 hours and 35 minutes.
In the mass running event, Willie McKinney was the first Inishowen A.C. finisher in a time of 3 hours, 21 minutes and 55 seconds. McKinney battled well in the latter stages of the 26.2 mile event as a calf and hamstring injury hampered his progress. Paddy Doherty from Buncrana finished comfortably in 3 hours and 32 minutes and was followed closely by debutant marathon runner Owen McKinney in and highly commendable 3.37. Shaun McLaughlin comfortably broke the 4-hour barrier for the second time this year when finishing in 3.52. Donal Doherty, who was running the distance for the first time crossed the line in Fitzwilliam Square in a creditable 3.57. Another debutant, Noel Doherty, was rewarded for his sensible race tactics with a fine 4.33. Anna Doherty from Urris was delighted with her first attempt at the marathon and recorded 6 hours exactly. Chatal Busek took more than one hour off her personal best, set in Belfast in May and came home in 6 hours and 10 minutes.
"Other athletes from Inishowen to compete in the Dublin Marathon were Maurice Clarke from Moville, who ran a personal best of 3 hours and 08 seconds, Gareth Doherty from Carndonagh who finished in 3.58 and Ann Doherty from Buncrana who crossed the line in just over 6 hours," said Inishowen Athletics Club chairperson, Niall McGee.
