Grants up to €30K for elderly and disabled 03.10.07

PENSIONERS and people in Donegal will disabilities will have access to grants of up to €30,000 from next month to adapt their homes.
The Housing Adaptation Grant for people with disabilities will run to a maximum of €30,000 while the Mobility Aids Grant for the elderly or infirm comes with a ceiling of €10,500.
Local Fianna Fail T.D., Niall Blaney said the new framework would be available from November 1st and follows discussions between the relevant voluntary organisations. A total of 80% of the funding will come from Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government with the remainder sourced from local authorities.
“The Housing Adaptation Grant may include the provision of access ramps downstairs toilet facilities, stair lifts, and accessible showers," said Deputy Blaney.
“The Mobility Aids Grant will address mobility problems primarily, but not exclusively, associated with ageing. The types of works covered under this scheme include the provision of grab rails, access ramps, level access showers, and stair lifts."
Meanwhile, a Scheme of Housing Aid for Older People will amalgamate the provisions of the existing essential repairs grant and the special housing aid for the elderly schemes.
It will include the provision of structural repairs or improvements, re-wiring, repairs to or replacement of water, and the provision of water, sanitary services and heating.
Deputy Blaney added: “I know that many people living in Donegal will find these schemes of assistance to them and I would encourage them to investigate their eligibility.
“The Government is committed to assisting people to stay in their own homes for as long as they are able, and these improved schemes will go some way to helping older people and people with disabilities to do just that.”
