Derry reeling after Bogside rape 07.11.07

A POLICE hunt is underway in Derry following the rape at knifepoint of a young American student.
It's understood the teenage girl was socialising with a group of friends in the Bogside Inn shortly before the attack. She momentarily stepped outside the pub where she was set upon by a man believed to be in his late teens or early 20s and was forced into a nearby car park.
The suspect is believed to be in his late-teens to early 20s, between 5'8" and 5'10" in height with slim build, short dark hair, possibly brown. It is thought he was wearing a white T-shirt with a green stripe or green logo.
The incident happened between 10.30pm and midnight in the Westland Street car park.
The victim, who is in her late teens, sustained minor injuries and was left seriously traumatised, according to police who are appealing for information on the attack.
SDLP leader and Foyle MP Mark Durkan described the rape as "a wicked and despicable attack" and said his thoughts were with the young girl at this time.
He appealed to anyone with information to urgently come forward to the PSNI in the hope the attacker would be caught as soon as possible.
Area PSNI commander, Chris Yates said a number of lines of inquiry were being pursued by the police.
"The victim herself has been medically examined and the scene where the incident happened is being forensically examined and that will lead to various lines of inquiry," he said. "But I need someone to come forward and give me a name."
