Donegal's Daffodil Day triumph

helped raise €87,000 during the Irish Cancer
Society's annual Daffodil Day this year.
The Donegal total contributed to a record €3.8m
raised nationally during Daffodil Day to help men,
women and children around the country, suffering
from cancer. |

"This total is the
largest amount that has been raised since Daffodil
Day first began 20 years ago," said a spokesperson.
"The Irish Cancer Society would like to extend a
heartfelt thank you to the public in Donegal for
continuing to support this day so the Society can
continue to provide free patient care and specialist
nursing services for people |
with cancer and their
families all over Ireland."
The latest data from the National Cancer Registry
shows that 25,372 people were diagnosed with cancer
in Ireland in 2005 with approximately 8,000 people
dying from the disease.
All monies raised from Daffodil Day are channelled
into the provision of free nationwide patient care
services including hospital and community based
nursing services for people with cancer and their
families.
The services include the National Cancer Helpline (Freefone
1800 200 700), oncology liaison nursing in major
cancer treatment hospitals, grants towards
specialist palliative care nurses in the community,
counselling services, cancer nurse education and
training, and the Society’s signature night nursing
service.
This year, more that 1,200 people across the country
will be cared for at home with the assistance of an
Irish Cancer Society funded night nurse. This
translates to around 4,800 nights of care. |
