City of Derry Airport reopens 29.05.07

City of Derry Airport has reopened after being given the all-clear by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
Airport management said a list of remedial works had been carried out with the agreement of the CAA and, following further inspection on Sunday, the green light was given for the airport to resume services from midnight.
City of Derry Airport A shut down had been ordered last Friday affecting travellers scheduled to use the airport over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Throughout the weekend contractors were at the Eglinton site, which is run and operated by Derry City Council, to undertake a number of improvements to the bird management system,
repairs to the area where planes park and minor drainage work adjacent to the runway.
Ryanair flights to London Stansted, East Midlands, Glasgow Prestwick and Liverpool will resume on Wednesday.
British Airways will operate its full programme of flights from the airport to Glasgow and Dublin while all chartered services will also operate as scheduled.
The Mayor of Derry, Cllr. Helen Quigley, said she was delighted at the development. But she said she would seek a full explanation about the closure.
Airport chief Seamus Devine again apologised to customers for the inconvenience.
"It's the last thing we wanted to happen and of course we accept a a large part of the responsibility," he said.
A management statement added: "The Airport Authority apologises for any inconvenience caused over the Bank Holiday weekend. Safety has and will remain the airport's number one priority."
