Wife appeals for assault witnesses 18.04.08

THE wife of a 43-year-old man assaulted in Belfast last weekend has appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Paul Newton, a brother of Des Newton who teaches at Moville Community College, was attacked near Belfast city centre. He remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
His wife Margaret yesterday went public with an appeal for anyone with information to come forward. She said the family had no idea why he was

"We want to thank everybody who is helping us at this very difficult time. Paul is receiving wonderful care at the Royal Victoria Hospital and the PSNI are assisting us," said Mrs. Newton, thanking family, friends and the people of Belfast for their support.
The victim, a businessman is well known in GAA and sporting circles in Sligo.
He had been in Belfast with a group of friends to attend Friday's rugby match between Ulster and Connacht. Early on Saturday morning he went to a takeaway restaurant in the Bradbury Place area. He was returning to his hotel nearby when he was the victim of an assault.
He fell and struck his head on the pavement and hotel staff alerted the emergency services.
