Drugs strategy Minister visits Whiteoaks 01.04.08

WHITEOAKS Rehabilitation Centre in Muff played host over Easter to Minister Pat Carey who heads up the National Drugs Strategy.
Mr. Carey T.D., who several days later announced a €2m national package to support the rehabilitation of drug users, was accompanied on his visit by local Senator Cecilia Keaveney.
“I'm delighted that Minister Pat Carey responded to the request to come to Donegal and he was genuinely very enthused by the very significant work being done in Whiteoaks," said Senator Keaveney.

Senator Cecilia Keaveney. "The Minister took time to get a guided tour of the Celtic Peace Garden as well as having a substantive meeting with Fr. Neal Carlin and his board."
She said the Minister was impressed by the work being undertaken at the local alcohol and drugs rehabilitation centre which, she hoped, would translate into future financial support.
“There was an appreciation of the work that was being undertaken and it is vital that this understanding develops into an advancement
of the future aspirations of the centre," she added.
Minister Carey also made an informal visit to the North West Alcohol Forum in Letterkenny to see first hand the work of Maura Mills, Denis Bradley and their team. He also met with members of the Regional Drugs Taskforce.
“It is obvious that the Minister is very dedicated to the brief of drug abuse as his use of Easter week to visit these centres of excellence displays. This local knowledge will feed in to the policy reviews of Minister Carey.
"I know when I return to Dublin and specific issues arise, the Minister will be very aware of our projects here in the county. I am very hopeful that following on from this first hand experience in Donegal, the Minister will remember these projects positively when they are seeking funding assistance in the future," added Senator Keaveney.
On March 26, Minister Carey announced a €2m funding package to support the development of rehabilitation initiatives through Drugs Task Forces around the country.
