Moville rise to the occasion

Moville...0-5 (A Hegarty 0-1, Newton 0-1, McGettigan 0-1, T Doherty 0-1, N Hegarty 0-1) Donaghmoyne...0-5 (McConnell 0-4 (2f), A Lennon 0-1) by Simon McGeady, Inishowen Independent in Galbally MOVILLE came agonisingly close to winning their first Ulster Senior Club Championship on Sunday, but in the end had to settle for a draw against Monaghan Champions Donaghmoyne. The Donegal champions led the 2006 All Ireland club champions for more than three quarters, but despite some late pressure could not find the score to put them over the top. The Carrick Field outfit were all that stood between Donaghmoyne and a grandslam of Ulster titles at the weekend after Emyvale took the Intermediate title on Saturday and Truagh had come back to win the Junior final against Derry’s Ballinascreen in the curtain raiser at Galbally on Sunday. |

The Donegal champions came
into this encounter with Stacy Cavanagh and Geraldine
Harkin struggling with injuries and while the former
started, the latter, though named in the programme at
corner forward, did not make an appearance. On a wet and windy day in South Tyrone Anthony Doogan’s underdogs stood proud in the face of their more decorated opposition. With determination and discipline, the Carrick field ladies disrupted much of the Donaghmoyne players’ early attacks, setting the tone for the rest of the match. The tireless Cora Courtney, for one, found her path to goal blocked by Gemma Faulkner and Aoife McLaughlin. Moville were no mere spoilers, however. The side that had swept away Down champions Corduff by four clear goals were in sync once more. Their moves were more fluid than Francie Coleman’s girls, who made a very slow start to their fifth Ulster final appearance in succession. them before captain Aoife
Hegarty settled the nerves with at seventh minute score. Moville added further points from corner-forward Aisling Newtown – who was giving her marker a torrid time at this stage – and Maressa McGettigan, before the Monaghan girls finally got on the scoreboard courtesy of Catriona McConnell’s point in the 15th minute. Maria Faulkner and Deirdre Foley made excellent blocks to set Moville going and from Foley’s block Moville went up the field and Treasa Dohery scored. McConnell’s free drew the deficit back to two once more, and Donaghmoyne might have gone ahead in the 24th minute when Angela Lennon unleashed a low shot from 20 metres that hit the base of Emma Cavanagh’s post. Donaghmoyne put Moville under concerted pressure for the first time in the half at the end of the half but Moville’s superb back-lines smothered the Monaghan forwards time and again. Moville kept their rivals waiting before the start of the second half, Margaret Mulhall and Davy McLaughlin using the time to drill their charged on the challenges ahead, perhaps. Against the wind Moville’s opportunities to attack were severely curtailed after the break, but the discipline was still in evidence. Donaghmoyne were still not firing on all cylinders. They hit fired five wides inside the first five minutes of the second half with Cora Courtney and McConnell guilty of bad misses. Ciara Hegarty nearly made them pay seven minutes into the half when she collected the ball just outside her own 45, burst past her marker and the challenge of several other red-shirted defenders before exchanging a pass with Maria Faulkner then smashing a shot that Donaghmore keeper Linda Martin did well to save. Shortly after that chance Niamh Hegarty scored a free to stretch the make it 0-5 to 0-2 and Moville looked on course for the victory. Belatedly, Donaghmoyne’s big name players started to live up to billing. Inter-county star Amanda Casey barged through with the ball and drew a free that McConnell converted then the Casey set up Lennon for a fine score with ten minutes left. And when Down referee Eugene O’Boyle penalised Moville once again a minute later McConnell split the uprights to bring Donaghmoyne level for the first time. Both sides had chances to win the match in the final stages but neither side had the wherewithal to strike the all important eleventh point after a draining 60 minutes of football. Relief then for Donaghmoyne, whose ten second half wides almost scupper their chances. They will surely play better when the sides meet again on the same sod next Saturday. For Moville there was disappointment, but also hope. And as team manager Anthony Doogan remarked at the end of the game, it’s only half time.
