MOVILLE under-16s secured a record five-in-a-row championship wins with a hard fought seven point victory over old rivals Termon at Convoy on Saturday.
Termon started brightly and had Moville under the cosh in the first five minutes. Dangerwoman Geraldine McLaughlin showed they meant business with a fine goal after a minute and a point soon followed. Moville regrouped and, backboned by the members of the ladies senior championship team, Ciara Hegarty, Niamh McLaughlin and Emma Cavanagh, they started to put a number of fine moves together. Moville registered four points in quick succession, two each from Niamh McLaughlin and the impressive Orla Furlong.
However Termon responded with three points of their own to maintain their three point lead as the midway point of the first half approached. A strong run from Ciara Hegarty finished with her hitting an unstoppable shot past the Termon keeper to draw Moville level for the first time in the game. Niamh McLaughlin and Geraldine McLaughlin traded points before Charmaine McDermott was on hand to hit a fine goal from close range to put Moville in the driving seat.
Things got better for the Foylesiders as 12 year old Kathy McLaughlin was on hand to
seize on a defensive error to slot home goal number three. Further points from Charmaine McDermott and 11 year old Shannon McDonald saw Moville lead 3-6 to 1-6 at the break.
As in the first half Termon started the brighter and had the Moville defence under pressure but found goalkeeper Sharon McDermott in top form. They reduced the arrears to four points before another goal from Ciara Hegarty put Moville firmly in the driving seat. Although Geraldine McLaughlin got a late goal, points from Niamh McLaughlin, Charmaine McDermott, and Sarah Jane McDonald saw Moville finish the stronger.
This was a fine all-round team performance and beside the player mentioned above, Shannon McDonald, Leonie Furlong, Ashling Ward and Geraldine Cavanagh also had fine games. The outlook for the future looks bright with five members of the team still playing at under 12 level, namely Rebecca Henry, Kathy McLaughlin, Sarah Jane McDonald, Blannad McLaughlin and Melissa McDermott.
