URRIS came out winners for the second time against Burt this season, securing an important victory in the All-County Division 2 league. With the sides sitting near the bottom of the table, both managers were desperate for a win. Urris’ home record has been their saving grace this season and this proved the case against Burt, who have been struggling with form all season.
Urris led by two points at half-time – 0-7 to 0-5 – and had stretched that to four before the game was put beyond doubt with three goals in quick succession in the final ten minutes.
Burt started the game brightly taking the lead in the first minute through a Benny McDermott point. Dara Doherty equalised with a free and Liam Diver pointed three minutes later for Urris. Burt’s Shane McDaid converted a free ten minutes into the game to tie the scores 0-2 to 0-2.
Enda McDermott and Liam Diver traded scores for Burt and Urris respectively in the 13th minute before Brian Doherty and Alan Friel gave the Straid men a two point lead.
Benny McDermott pulled a point back for Burt with a free in the 22nd minute. Alan Friel knocked over a point from a wide angle before adding a pointed free for Urris three minutes later. A minute before half-time Benny McDermott abridged the difference back to two points from a pointed free.
The second half began with Alan Friel and Benny McDermott exchanging pointed frees. Urris’ Brian Doherty was substituted a few minutes in, however the home side pushed on ahead with points from Shaun Paul Doherty and Alan Friel.
A Dara Doherty sidelined point in the 36th minute put Urris five
points ahead. Burt responded with two points from a Benny McDermott free and Mickey McCann. Alan Friel then knocked over a pointed free for Urris on 47 minutes.
There was still time for Burt to fight back but a couple of individual errors in the Burt defence allowed Urris to put the result beyond doubt. A quick ball in the 53rd minute allowed Simon Friel to round his marker and strike the ball into the back of the net.
That goal was followed with two more, with Ciaran Friel pouncing on a mistimed hand pass to chip in for a goal and Simon Friel getting the last touch for the third goal.
Benny McDermott knocked over a free for Burt in the 59th minute. However Mickey Harkin got the last score for Urris, hitting over a point in the 61st minute, and gave the hosts a 13-point winning margin, 3-13 to 0-9.
