RADIO listeners across
the North West are mourning the death of veteran
broadcaster Don O'Doherty.
The Highland Radio and former BBC Radio Foyle
presenter died on Saturday following a short
illness.
Mr O'Doherty was also well known in Derry for his
charity work as well as being one of the most
sought-after comperes for music and entertainment
shows.
He was a favourite among thousands of listeners and
his distinctive voice and easy style also introduced
younger fans to the great singers of the 1940s and
1950s.
Retired Bishop of Derry, Dr Edward Daly and comedian
Frank Carson were among lifelong friends who paid
warm tributes yesterday.
Dr Daly said he was "deeply saddened" at the passing
of one of his closest friends.
Carson told BBC Radio Foyle he would ask Mr
O'Doherty's family if he could keep his bow tie as a
keepsake.
"He was a close friend for 40 years - every time I
went to Derry I'd stay at his house, so I was part
of the family.
"His bow tie is something which will always remind
me of him and I'd wear it every chance I get," said
the comedian. The late broadcaster will be laid to
rest in Derry on Tuesday following 12 noon Requiem
Mass in St.Patricks Church,
Pennyburn. |
