Petrol falls to 99.9c a litre 03.12.08

PETROL prices in Inishowen have finally fallen below the €1 mark in line with the national trend.
Prices stood at 99.9c a litre for unleaded petrol and diesel yesterday in Fahan and Buncrana. However, prices in other parts of the peninsula were still hovering around the 1.01c to 1.04c a litre mark at teatime.
Bradley's Topaz service station in Fahan was doing brisk business all day yesterday as passing motorists noticed the price drop.
James Bradley sounded a note of caution, however, and said he wasn't sure how long the under - €1 a litre price would last - particularly in relation to diesel.
One customer said she had noticed the price drop back to 99.9c in Letterkenny last week resulting in long queues as cash-strapped drivers filled up their vehicles.
At their height this summer, the price of unleaded petrol reached over 1.33c a litre while diesel hit more than 1.40c a litre.
The 99.9c a litre of unleaded was the national average price yesterday, according to the pumps.ie website. But service stations in Buncrana and Fahan

were cheaper on diesel which stood yesterday at a national average of 103.9c a litre.
Meanwhile, Fine Gael has released statistics showing that Irish people are still paying significantly more for petrol and diesel than the rest of the EU.
The Opposition party says prices had still had not gone down enough.
The party's finance spokesman Richard Bruton said petrol is on average 24% more expensive in Ireland, while diesel is 18% more than in the EU.
However, EU prices are calculated weekly whereas Irish prices are tallied monthly.
The National Consumer Agency recently said: The data the EU is receiving from the Irish authorities is hopelessly inadequate and out of date, with the result that weekly tracking of Irish prices versus those in other EU countries is impossible." Fine Gael has called for better tracking of Irish petrol prices.
