Exciting opportunity for Inishowen workers 28.01.08

INISHOWEN people with years of work experience can turn their skills into a recognised qualification under an exciting new programme at Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT).
If you have experience in the following areas - information technology; text processing; customer care; business management or office administration - you can receive recognition in the form of a third level qualification under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme.
An information session for those interested in the initiative will be held in LYIT on Monday, February 4 at 7pm.
The programme is relevant to employees from a wide range of backgrounds including office staff, retail staff, engineers, managers/supervisors and those employed in the public sector.
It works as follows: interested applicants attend the information evening and one training session where the RPL initiative is explained (note: if there is significant interest from individuals from the one organisation, the information and training session can be held at their workplace at a time that suits the employer); the applicant chooses a module that is relevant to their work experience and learning to date; the applicant will then be given the different components of that module; applicants must provide evidence of this learning by creating a portfolio (all applicants will receive free training on how to construct their portfolio and finally, the portfolio is given to a lecturer at LYIT who then makes a decision on whether or not to award recognition in the form of a certificate or credits.
"The applicant will have continuous support throughout the process. The portfolio can be created in the applicant’s own time and space in a relatively short period of time and it does not require attending night classes etc," said a spokesperson. "Also, because this project is Government-funded this year, the cost to the employee is minimal at around €60-€80). If the applicant wishes to receive single subject certificates/exemptions in additional modules, he or she can repeat the process again."
