Blue Flag set to return to Culdaff 07.05.08

by Liam Porter, Inishowen Independent

INISHOWEN councillor Bernard McGuinness has expressed his confidence that the Blue Flag lost at the famous Culdaff beach last year will be restored this summer.
Councillor McGuinness like many locals was angry that the beach was the only one in the county last year to lose its blue flag status, but insisted this week that a huge amount of work had been undertaken over the past year to address issues which had led to the loss of the Blue Flag status.

Culdaff Beach lost its Blue Flag status in 2007. “At this stage I’m pretty confident that the outstanding issues that led to the loss of the flag last year have been addressed and we will be in a position to get the Blue Flag back this year.”
When the list of beaches was announced last year there was a
sense of shock and anger when Culdaff was not included.
At the time an Taisce said Culdaff had lost the flag mainly due to environmental management problems including persistent camping in the sand dunes.
Councillor McGuinness insisted that since then Donegal County Council and the local Development Association had carried out a lot of work to resolve the outstanding issues.
On top of that he added that work had also begun in relation to the introduction of bye-laws which will govern issues like camping on the beach.
“These laws haven’t been adopted yet but they have been drawn up and the first workshop has been held so I’m confident that when this evidence is shown to those looking at the beach they will realise that we are dealing with these matters,” he said.
