Council apologises to air
passengers

PEOPLE from Inishowen
who intended using City of Derry Airport on
Wednesday and Thursday have been advised to check
the airport's website for updates.
The airport has been forced to close on the two days
due to strike action by Council workers over low
pay. |

All Derry City Council
services including waste collection, public parks,
swimming pools and sports facilities will also
close.
A spokesperson said the Council made a strong case
to UNITE to allow the airport to remain exempt from
the strike. |
"Council are extremely
disappointed that an agreement could not be reached
with the union and as a result, City of Derry
Airport has been forced to suspend its services from
midnight on Tuesday, July 15 until midnight on
Thursday, July 17," said the spokesperson.
"City of Derry Airport apologises for the disruption
to passengers and stresses that this is an
exceptional situation and would welcome the support
of passengers and airlines at this time."
Derry Mayor Councillor Gerard Diver said he "deeply
regretted" that an agreement could not be reached
with UNITE.
"Council have made UNITE fully aware of their
concerns about the ramifications for the airport,
its passengers and the local economy if the facility
is forced to close. Council have tried to support
both unions with the planned strike action next week
and it is regrettable that such accommodation was
not reciprocated."
