‘Kidults’ wanted for
monster truck rally

AFTER a three-year hiatus Carnstock is set to return
next summer, though in will be much changed from
before. The Carndonagh festival was previously held
in the centre of town, in the diamond. The 2009
festival, however, will take place in a field on the
outskirts of town and feature a much broader range
of music and arts.
As a fundraiser, the organising committee are
holding a Monster Truck Rally around the diamond
this Saturday, the 23rd of August. The event gets
underway at 9pm.
Carnstock organiser Siobhan Shiels explained more.
“We are looking for kidults who fancy racing around
the diamond in peddle push cars. The only catch is
the car has to be smaller than yourself and you have
do it in fancy dress.”
There will be several laps of the diamond – three
has been suggested – and afterwards a Wacky Races
themes night at the races in the Arch Inn.
“It’s like a night at the races, but instead of
using horses we have cut up and edited together
episodes from the Wacky Races cartoon,” added
Siobhan. |
The evening will also feature an arcade racing game
competition and feature music by DJ Seamus McCarron.
Speaking about Carnstock’s return next summer,
Siobhan said the event was moving out of the diamond
for several reasons.
“Firstly, we want to have it somewhere more remote,
so |

the music doesn’t disturb the residents in Carn
who want to sleep at 1am. But we also need more
space. We intend to have two stages and other areas
promoting ecology” said Siobhan who added she would
seek advice from organisers of the Inishowen Summer
Gathering.
“We hope to include ecological issues, plant some
trees and inform about what is going on in the world
outside our own peninsula and what little steps we
can do to help.
“Hopefully there will be an area for camping too, so
if anyone has a suggestion where it can be held, or
would like to give us the use of the field, please
get in touch.”
The last Carnstock was held in 2006. Since then
Siobhan has been attending to her further education,
which included a stint in Germany studying community
development. Now she’s back and determined to help
make Carnstock bigger and better than ever. |
