Movie gold over the Inishowen rainbow 11.03.08

THE stunning landscape of Inishowen is set to feature in a new €6m movie scheduled to begin filming here at the end of April.
It is understood the film is called 'A Shine of Rainbows' and is an Irish adaptation of the novel by British author Lillian Beckwith. It is a heart-warming story of a lonely orphan whose life is “transformed by an extraordinary woman who teaches him to conquer grief and discover the magic in nature and himself”.
The film will be directed by Emmy award-winning Vic Sarin, one of Canada's most distinguished cinematographers, who has more than 150 films to his credit. The film is an British/Canadian/Irish collaboration. It is being co-produced by Canada's Sepia Film director, Vic Sarin
Films in association with Octagon Films in Bray, County Wicklow while the project has the backing of the Irish Film Board.
A spokesperson for Octagon Films confirmed that the film crew was expected to arrive in Inishowen around the end of this month. The film producers have received some guidance in setting up here from Donegal County Council's cultural development office in Carndonagh. The office's area manager Aideen Doherty also told yesterday's Inishowen Electoral Area meeting that much of the movie would be filmed in Malin Head with other scenes to be shot at the Isle of Doagh, Leenan and Urris. She said about half the film's budget - around €3m - would be spent in the peninsula.
"Filming is not expected to begin until the end of April and into May but the project is expected to be in pre-production from around the end of March," said the Octagon Films spokesperson.
Apart from the director, the Octagon spokesperson was unable to confirm whether any major actors are set to feature in the film. It is understood, however, that people from the locality will be needed as extras.
'A Shine of Rainbows' will also bring its own little pot of gold for local property owners in the Carndonagh and Malin areas. Around 17 two, three and four bedroom rental properties are being sourced for the film crew by Franklin's estate agents for a short-term let. The rental period will be from the end of March and could continue up until May providing an economic boost for the shops and restaurants of the area. The production crew and actors will be coming and going as they are needed.
Some of Inishowen's most stunning seaside locations will feature in the new movie with the hope it will bring tourism benefits to the region in the future.
