An investigation is
underway into a fire at sand dunes in Lisfannon
beach earlier this week amid speculation it could
have been started maliciously.
The fire broke out in straw bales that were
installed by Donegal County Council as a temporary
solution to protect the sand dunes against coastal
erosion.
A number of local fire units attended the blaze that
broke out on Tuesday night and spread quickly due to
the dry conditions. Buncrana-based county councillor
Rena Donaghey said a lot of hard work by Council
staff and money had been wasted. She said the bales
had been working well as a temporary coastal
protection. "They were growing very well and were
having the desired effect," Cllr. Donaghey told
Highland Radio. "It was going to suffice until such
time as there would be the money to put the rock
armour in place which is a good few years down the
road. It is worrying because it took a lot of time
to get this done and Council staff so it is an awful
pity." |
