North West loses another great
friend

DERRY and Inishowen
came together this week to say a final farewell to
much-loved teacher Anne Doherty who was laid to rest
following a poignant and emotional funeral in the
city. Anne, who was 56, was the eldest daughter of
the late Paddy Doherty, from the Illies, Buncrana
and his late wife Maureen.
With her siblings, she spent many happy summers as a
child in the Buncrana area and continued to be a
regular visitor to the peninsula.
She was well known in the region as a great teacher
who had a huge talent for imparting her knowledge of
Irish, not least because her own passion for the
language was infectious. Anne was brought up in
Chapel Road in the Waterside. She taught at St
Brecan's College for more than 20 years. |
One former student told
her heartbroken family that Anne not only encouraged
her to learn, but also taught her how to be an
open-minded, compassionate human being. Anne had
moved into adult education later in her career and
also spent much of her time teaching creative
writing at Derry's women's centre.
She taught Irish at schools across the city as well
as in the Donegal Gaeltacht and more recently at the
North West Regional College.

humour and kindness.
She taught Irish at An Gaeláras in Great James
Street for almost ten years where her classes were
filled with fun and laughter and where she was
affectionately known as Áine.
Paying tribute to a much-loved colleague, An
Gaeláras chief executive Gearóid Ó hEára said: "Áine
had patience and compassion for all who came in
contact with her. She was a truly decent human being
who was a pleasure to meet at any time. Her passing
is a tragedy, not just for Pauline and her family
circle, but also for her family within the community
of Irish-speakers and learners. We will cherish her
memory with fondness." Anne is survived by her
partner, Pauline, her brothers and sisters, Eamon,
Tom, Gerard, Geraldine and Mary, nieces and nephews,
grandson Ben and extended family.
Anne died at the Shore Front in Buncrana on
Saturday. Her funeral took place from her home, 3
Glenview Street, on Wednesday following Requiem Mass
at St. Columb's Church, Waterside. She was buried
afterwards in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ardmore. |
