Report: Inishowen Independent

RAMPANT Urris had a facile 19-point victory over Burt in the all-Inishowen Division 2 county decider in Convoy on Saturday. Stronger in every sector of the pitch, Urris put in a tremendous first half performance against the strong wind and led by 4-4 to 0-1 at the break. They added six further points in the second period to Burt’s two to record a 19 point victory.
Midfielder and joint captain Darren Coyle opened the scoring for the Urris men early on, but that was cancelled out by a Georgie Kelly effort for Burt. Jonathan Devlin, Gavin McGrath and Darren Gallagher were doing well in defence and with the wind on their backs Burt were enjoying a good measure of possession, but struck a number of poor wides and failed to put their opponents under pressure.
Urris made them pay dearly for those misses. Pointed frees from Kevin McLaughlin and Coyle put them further in front before four goals in ten minutes effectively sealed the victory for Paul McLaughlin’s side. Ryan Ivers was first to find the net and centre forward Aaron Friel raised the green flag moments later. Further goals from Kevin McLaughlin and Daniel Harkin, and a point from midfielder Conor Bradley had them 15 points clear at the break. In defence, Pauric Ruddy and Danny Devlin were first to every breaking ball, while Connie McLaughlin and Gary McDaid were also to the fore.
Two points from Kevin McLaughlin further stretched Urris’ lead early in the second half, before Ruairí Bradley and Conor Harkin responded for Burt. Both sides introduced a raft of substitutions, but further points from Aaron Friel, Conor Bradley and two from Darren Coyle saw them win on a 19 point margin.
Afterwards, joint team captains Darren Coyle and Aaron Friel accepted the U14 championship trophy from county youth officer Liam McElhinney who paid tribute to the quality of Urris display.
With the Northern Board Division 2 league and championship, the county league and championship
titles, and the Inishowen championship (where they beat County Division 1 finalists Buncrana), Urris have had the perfect season: five competitions entered and five competitions won. In two years time they will step up to Division 1 at U16 and if they stick together in the meantime they will be more than capable of making a real mark at that grade.
