MALIN recorded an overwhelming and altogether comprehensive win over Robert Emmet’s in the final of the Ladies Junior Championship at Páirc Naomh Mhuire, Convoy on Sunday night.
The Inishowen side coasted towards the title, seeing off the Castlefin side at an unexpected canter. Two goals from Zoe Doherty inside the opening three minutes set the tone for Malin as they strolled to a half time lead of 2-8 to Emmet’s solitary point.
After Doherty’s early brace, Ashling McDermott added three points for Malin to leave a staggering nine points between the sides with barely 16 minutes on the clock. Breda McDaid and Zoe Doherty kept the ball rolling with two further scores before Martina Rushe pointed for Robert Emmet’s in what was only their first real attack of the half.
Three more unanswered points from McDermott rounded off the scoring in the first half for Malin as they lead by thirteen points at the break.
Indeed it could have been a few more had it not been for a wonderful save from the Emmet’s ‘keeper, Sarah McMenamin, from an Ashling McDermott close range shot.
The second half was not as high scoring as the first but equally controlled and measured from a Malin perspective as they once again restricted their opponents to just one score in thirty minutes of football.
Zoe Doherty pointed for Malin in the eighth minute of the second half before Emma McCrory responded in vain for Robert Emmet’s on the 45th minute. Ashling McDermott though had no intentions of resting on her impressive first half laurels as she rounded off the game with a goal and a point in the last ten minutes.
Seventeen points was the margin of victory in the end for Malin as they might consider stepping up a grade or two for next year’s championship. Later this month they will compete in the Ulster Junior Club Championship.
