Report: Inishowen Independent MOVILLE took the spoils from this tense Foyleside derby to leapfrog the Ture men in the league table and steady their ship after running into a sticky patch in the league in the last six weeks. After a storming start to the campaign, defeats to Naomh Padraig, Convoy and Milford in recent matches had seen the Carrick Field side slide down the table. Naomh Padraig prevailed 1-8 to 0-8 when these sides met in Ture. They reached the midway point of the league season in third place, just two points behind leaders Milford with a couple of games in hand. |

Having seen their route out
of this division blocked by relegated teams in the past,
Aiden McAleer’s side know the value of wins against the
big boys in a league where you can win the vast majority
of your matches and still end up not going up. Their plan to do the double over Moville unravelled early as the home side took charge and dominated the first half and, with a little help from the match official, saw off the Naomh Padraig fight-back in the second. Moville had the breeze in the first half and were able to boss the midfield. Despite the best efforts of the impressive Ryan McColgan, Iskaheen backs struggled to contain Moville’s vibrant half forward line in the first quarter. |

Hegarty and a couple of frees from Sean O’Hare had
Moville four points to no score up inside ten minutes. Playing into the teeth of the wind, Naomh Padraig opted for a short, hand-passing attack, but their moves frequently broke down, much to the visitors’ frustration. Nigel McMonagle added to Moville’s tally in the 14th minute, but six minutes later Naomh Padraig gave themselves a foothold in the match after sloppy clearance by one of his team mates forced Enda Faulkner to bring down Anthony McColgan 40 metres out. Aidan Lynch drilled in the free and Oisin McColgan reacted before anyone in a navy blue shirt to punch past McGeady for the games opening goal. That goal was a false dawn for the visitors as Moville continued to play with the greater fluency. Frees from Malachy McDermott, Sean O’Hare and Oran McDermott gave the home side a healthy looking 0-9 to 1-0 lead at the half. The Iskaneen boys had much more of the play in the second half and as they chipped away at the Moville lead, the hosts grew more anxious. The stylish Eunan Keaveney was an asset, both winning the ball and pitching in with a couple of fine scores. He almost got another goal raiding from the right only for Maurice McGeady to deny him with a good save. Dermot Keaveney then burst through but hash of his shot. Luckily, Anthony McColgan retrieved the situation with a point. It was the 38th minute and Moville’s lead was down to four. Then came a moment of controversy when Oran McDermott appeared to cross the sideline before playing the ball inside. The move ended with John McGeady popping over and the Naomh Padraig player crying foul. Their sense of injustice only grew when Moville were awarded a penalty that Malachy McDermott thumped home to stretch the lead to six. Naomh Padraig valiantly battled on. Points from Lynch and Dermot Keaveney kept them in the hunt and when Martin Duffy and Colm McColgan combined superbly to set up Lynch, the forward thumped the ball home to bring his side back to within one goal of pulling level. That goal almost came when Colm McColgan’s high-ball crashed off McGeady’s crossbar and after the ref had sorted out the scramble for possession a free out was the verdict. That final scare survived, Malachy McDermott settled the issue with a late free.
