WHEN Carlo Diggin fired home a great goal after just eight minutes of this clash it signalled the start of the end of the Aileach resistance and the start of the scoring in what proved to be a one-sided affair.
Aileach battled bravely throughout but a Buncrana side who had the services of a huge number of Academy players, always looked more comfortable and much more likely to run out as winners.
They didn’t have the first chance though, Morris Curtis beating the offside trap in the 7th minute but blasting over the bar with the goal at his mercy.
A minute later Diggin’s goal gave Buncrana the lead and while Ruairi Bradley’s free forced Conor O’Donnell into a decent stop in the 13th minute, Aileach rarely threatened the Buncrana goal in the first half.
In contrast the Buncrana lads had managed to get into their stride and some clever passing from Dale Kerr in the heart of the midfield and some great work down the left by Robbie Fullerton and Mark Timlin managed to keep the Aileach defence hard at work.
However their resistance didn’t last out and Buncrana added to their lead in the 27th minute when Colm McLaughlin’s shot following a quick free-kick beat Andrew Oakley in the Aileach goal.
Oakley who had made a good stop from Caomhan Doherty in the 17th minute, did well to push Kevin O’Loughlin’s fierce shot over in the 31st minute and although they went in at the break two goals down, Aileach must have felt they were still in the match.
But their optimism was short-lived and only seven minutes had elapsed in the second half when Carlo Diggin was on hand to slot home at the back post when Colm McLaughlin’s mis-hit shot fell into his path.
Two minutes later Aileach’s Gavin Doherty flashed a header just past the post and then Morris Curtis forced O’Donnell into a good save, diving smartly at his front post to smother the Aileach striker’s shot.
Curtis came close again in the 56th minute with a shot that flew inches past the post, and he blasted across the face of the goal in the 59th minute towards Ronan McDermot who wasn’t able to steer his shot on target.
Buncrana sub Ritchie McGrory had a chance to add to their lead but saw Oakley save with his legs, but there was nothing the Aileach keeper could do when Harry Forshaw hammered home into the top corner to make it 4-0 to Buncrana.
At that stage the game was well and truly over as a contest but there was still time for the impressive Timlin to get his name on the score sheet, racing through to a pass from Forshaw and slotting past Oakley to put the seal on the win.
