Inishowen athletes to be honoured  09.01.09

Inishowen well represented in Donegal Sports Star nominations

THE Donegal Sports Star committee have announced the full list of nominations for the 33rd awards ceremony, which take place on Friday, January 30 in the Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny.
Once again, the local sporting community has shown a great interest in the annual event with some intense competition for the honours in 24 senior categories, including the Appreciation and Hall of Fame awards.
The sportsmen and women of Inishowen are well represented in the nominations, many of whom will fancy their chances of lifting an award.
The Inishowen Athletic Club duo Helena Crossan and Karol Doherty are up for the Athletics prize. Helena is also up for a special achievement award, while Karol will be favourite to take the para-sport award.
Illies Golden gloves pair William McLaughlin and Tyrone McCullagh both had exceptional 2008 in the ring and this is reflected in their selection in the boxing category.
Off the back of their World Championship winning feat in Italy last spring, Clonmany B Tug of War team are up for the team award. However they face stiff competition from the Gaelic footballers of St Eunan’s and the LYIT basketball team, among others.
Carndonagh ABC’s Jim Callaghan receives a richly-deserved Hall of Fame nomination, while the Clay Pigeon award is a straight shoot out between Paddy Brown of St. Johnston, Peter Monaghan from Buncrana and the latter’s club-mate, Kenny Doyle.

Malin’s Stephen McCallion, is up for a special athlete award.
Other Inishowen nominees include, Mickey McCann (hurling), Laura D' Urso (rowing) and Ronan McLaughlin (Equestrian).
There have been some fine achievements at schools level in 2008 and that is reflected in the nominations for the eight categories.
Scoil Mhuire, Buncrana, are up for best secondary school, while David Deeney has been nominated in the Best sports teacher, secondary school.
Best Sports Secondary School Girl could be Deirdre Foley, Carndonagh Community School.
St Mura’s Burnfoot are up for a slew of awards including best Primary School, Best Sports Boy, Primary (Georgie Kelly), Best Sports Girl, Primary (Paula McGrory, St; Karen Kelly and Lean Kelly).
The final duty on the night for the special guest, former Republic of Ireland soccer star, Packie Bonner will be to present the overall Sports Star winner with an award to recognise outstanding success last year. The current holder of that prestigious honour is rally driver Shaun Gallagher.
