"Cheapskates" dumping in graveyard skip 20.01.09

BUNCRANA'S parish priest has criticised the "cheapskates" who are dumping their household waste in the local graveyard skip.
The skip at St Mary's Cemetery, Cockhill, is there for people to dispose of withered flowers, wreaths and weeds when tidying up their loved ones' graves.
It is also there to facilitate the local grave digger in his duties and to help the caretaker keep the cemetery neat and rubbish-free. But Fr Walsh said the skip had recently become a magnet for fee-shy householders who don't want to pay for rubbish collection.
"It would appear some people
are using the skip in the graveyard to avoid paying for waste collection. I would describe that as cheapskate," said Fr Walsh.
He said he hoped people would respect church property in future and not use it as a municipal amenity.
"I would ask that they please stop doing this and dispose of their waste in the normal way. We are concerned that domestic waste will attract rats to the graveyard and it is also very upsetting for the families among us who have loved ones buried nearby," he added.
