Carn recycling charges coming soon 24.04.09

PEOPLE who want to recycle in Carndonagh only have about a week to do so free of charge. Fees to use the civic amenity recycling centre will be introduced in a matter of days and it is understood the charge will relate to the amount being brought in for recycling i.e., car, van, trailer-load.
Local election candidate for the area, Sean Ruddy, last night said the charges would result in fly-dumping around Inishowen and would have a negative impact on the community as a whole. He said his colleague, Cllr Pádraig MacLochlainn had previously received assurances from the county manager that if any new charges were to be introduced, elected representatives would be informed and would have a direct input into the decision.
"Local councillors' roles in policy-making are too limited and many very important decisions are made by unelected council managers or by distant ministers," said Mr Ruddy.
"We need to take control over matters of local importance, such as these new charges on amenity sites from unelected decision makers and put them into local hands."
Carn-based Mr Ruddy said the amenity centre had been
"nothing but positive" for the town and the peninsula. "The community have played their part in doing the right thing for the environment," he said. However, he said that regardless of the free status of the site for a long period, some people still resort to illegal dumping.
Mr Ruddy and his colleague Cllr Daren Lalor recently found an illegal rubbish mound at Sliabh Sneacht.
Meanwhile, he said charging to recycle in Carn was simply another form of tax on already cash-strapped householders.
"If elected along with party colleagues, we will be fighting for major transformation of local government, to empower local communities and enable the delivery of planning and public services that correspond to local needs."
