Inishowen urged to 'Grow it Yourself' 23.07.09

PEOPLE in Inishowen are being encouraged to grow their own fruit and vegetables for better health and savings.
A new national not-for-profit organisation called Grow it Yourself (GIY) aims to establish local food growers groups in every town in Donegal and nationwide.
The organisation was established by journalist and author Michael Kelly. Hundreds of people are already involved in existing GIY groups where activities include monthly meetings, talks and demos, garden visits, seed and plant swaps, produce bartering, mentor panels and growers' meitheals. GIY meetings are free and open to people interested in food growing at all levels, i.e. from growing a few herbs on the balcony to complete self-sufficiency, from beginners to old hands
“Growing your own food can be an isolating experience particularly when you are a novice and you don’t know where to start,” said Kelly. “A GIY group is about creating a growers' community so that people can come together in their locality to learn from each other and exchange tips, knowledge, produce and war-stories!" GIY Ireland is looking for local champions who are interested in setting up a GIY group in their area. The group will give them all the help they need to get a sustainable, successful group up and running. GIY's official launch will take place on September 12 in Waterford Institute of Technology. Speakers at the launch will include Food Minister Trevor Sargent of the Fresh from the Sea author Clodagh McKenna with GIY Ireland founder Michael Kelly.
Green Pary, Michael Kelly and celebrity cook, Darina Allen while a cooking demonstration will be provided by Fresh from the Sea author Clodagh McKenna who recently visited Inishowen for her RTE programme. GIY Ireland is supported by Social Entrepreneurs Ireland. If you would like to attend the launch or find out more about Grow it Yourself, visit www.GIY.ie .
