Buncrana festival to return 01.07.09

BUNCRANA could have a summer music festival again next year following confirmation this week that a newly formed Music Festival Committee has commenced work on bringing the popular event back to the town.
Attempts to revive the festival began recently on the internet networking site Facebook and over 800 members have signed up to the site to exchange views and ideas on how the festival might be revived.
Buncrana Mayor Lee Tedstone was one of those who signed up to the site and he confirmed yesterday that he is now also vice-chairman of the new committee.
“There is a very enthusiastic and vibrant young committee in place now to revive the music festival and we’re confident that we can have a brilliant festival organised again for next summer.”
The new Mayor added that the committee was also looking at the possibility of staging a one off event in late August or early September of this year, but mostly to raise awareness and some funds for next year’s event.
“We are looking towards a completely transformed festival that includes not just music but also drama and street performances and all sorts of family fun. We’re hoping that this will become a mini arts festival if you like an event that has a whole range of events.”
The Fine Gael councillor praised the work of Michael Hone who had set up the Facebook page and is now chairman of the new committee.
“He has been very enthusiastic and a real driving force behind this whole project and I’d have to say that everyone involved is looking forward to getting this off the ground again.”
Already the new committee has met with some members of the previous committee and are delighted with the support they have received.
“We will hopefully have a public consultation meeting soon where we will take on board the ideas of the members of the public and after that we’ll work towards making next year’s festival a brilliant event.
