BT Ulster Colleges Corn na nÓg 18.11.10
Inis Eoghain make it two wins from two

Coláistí Inis Eoghain...4-12

St Mary’s Magherafelt...2-3

COLÁISTÍ Inis Eoghain made it two wins from two against Derry opposition in the Corn na nÓg when they had a comfortable win over St Mary’s Magherafelt in Celtic Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Inis Eoghain made two changes from the team that defeated St Pat’s Maghera on Saturday, with Andrew Doherty replacing Eoin Barkley in defence and Sean McHugh coming in for Tommy Byrne in attack. The side’s performance over the hour showed a marked improvement over Saturday’s game, with the players combining well, particularly in attack, to overwhelm their opponents.
With the wind in their favour in the first half, Inis Eoghain opened strongly but stubborn Magherafelt defending kept them at bay. With points from captain John Campbell, Caolan Mailey, Georgie Kelly, Darren Gallagher and Mark Coyle, Inis Eoghain led by 0-5 to 0-0 after 15 minutes. Eamon Birt and Joseph Quigley were manfully holding the Mary’s defence together, but the Derry school were hit for three quick fire goals in the ten minutes before half time.
First, Christopher McLaughlin rose to punch a long John Campbell punt past Ryan O’Neill and into the net and two minutes later Campbell was again the provider when he passed to Sean McHugh who finished sharply to the net from close range.
Adam McLafferty opened St Mary’s account with a fine individual point, but Inis Eoghain maintained their stranglehold on the game with Georgie Kelly getting his side’s third goal.
Goalkeeper Liam Grimley made an excellent save from James McEldowney six minutes before half time, but Magherafelt found the net soon after when Conor Small planted the ball in the bottom left corner. However, points from Gallagher, Campbell and Mailey saw Inis Eoghain lead by 3-8 to 1-1 at the break.
Inis Eoghain introduced Jonathan McDaid and Jamie Barr at half time and both did well in the second period, but Magherafelt re-jigged their team and were much improved in the second period.
Sean McHugh and Georgie Kelly extended Inis Eoghain’s lead before Thomas O’Kane hit a goal and a point for Magherafelt. Dylan Coyle, who looked dangerous throughout, chipped in with a point for St Mary’s but two points from Georgie Kelly and a goal from substitute Jonathan McLaughlin saw Inis Eoghain run out comfortable winners.
Inis Eoghain now sit atop Section B of the Corn na nÓg, but will require victory over St Pat’s Armagh and St Eunan’s College in the next fortnight to ensure progression to the quarter-finals, which are due to be played at the end of January.
Given the quality of their victories to date, two further wins are well within their scope.
