ANOTHER Sunday...another ‘Shorty’ show. If there is a better player than Conor Lafferty in the Reserve League, I have yet to see him. The fiery midfield maestro propelled Moville to another impressive victory with a superb individual display and three goals to boot.
After opening the scoring in the seventeenth minute Lafferty, assisted by Gearoid McQuillan in the centre, tormented a Glengad team, which did not deserve to be on the end of a 6-0 scoreline after controlling the play for large periods and striking the woodwork three times.
Harry McQuillan chipped in with a couple of superb finishes for the home team while Michael Brendan Doherty capped a fantastic performance with an opportunist goal. Moville are motoring.
Glengad saw Ronald McDaid deservedly red-carded in the second-half for an ill-judged swing at Harry McQuillan, who enjoyed his best outing of the season so far. The dismissal made little difference to the outcome though as Moville were four clear when Willie Curran gave the defender his marching orders.
With the composure of James Holmes and Michael Craig at the back allied to the firepower up front, manager John L. Coyle has fashioned the best team in the league yet again. Without regulars such as Darren Bredin, Maurice McCauley and Kevin McDermott, Moville showed their strength in depth with even goalkeeper Ralph Bredin delivering an outfield cameo role.
Rarely taking the easy option, Moville try to play football at every opportunity; always looking for passing options. They are a formidable outfit, which could easily ply its trade in a higher division.
Glengad frontmen TJ McKinley, Gary McLaughlin and Gary Kelly battled gamely but their luck was out on a number of occasions against the best defence in the league.
Warming to their task on a freezing cold morning, Glengad were the better team for the first fifteen minutes and came within millimetres of the lead when Gary Kelly’s shot from 25 yards crashed off the bar after a poor clearance by home keeper Sean McGuinness.
Christy McGeoghan, leading the line well, almost notched Moville ahead but the industrious centre-forward was just unuable to connect with Gearoid McQuillan’s centre.
A minute later Conor Lafferty fired John L. Coyle’s men ahead; poking in at the second attempt after McGeoghan’s incisive pass.
Less than two minutes later Moville had doubled their advantage. This time Lafferty was the provider; his perfect cross swept home by Michael Brendan Doherty on a late burst into the Glengad box.
The visitors, who had looked lively early on, were caught in a Moville storm and striker Harry McQuillan raced clear to make it 3-0 after collecting Lafferty’s astute ball on the half hour mark.
Almost grabbing a lifeline in the closing stages of the opening period, Glengad were out of luck again when Michael Doherty’s header crashed off the post following a free-kick. TJ McKinley then fired over from seven yards after controlling Liam Nelson’s expert cross.
Ruthless Moville punished the visitors’ profligacy on the stroke of half-time with Harry McQuillan making it four after a powerful right-footed finish from the edge of the area.
Frustrated defender Ronald McDaid was sent off in the early stages of the second-half as Moville continued to dominate before Conor Lafferty added another with a controlled finish past Michael McLaughlin from 25 yards.
After excellent work by substitute Ralph Bredin, Lafferty completed his hat-trick with a superb finish with the outside of his boot.
Gary Kelly hit another post for Glengad late on but it was Moville’s day.
