Burt win U13 Championship 05.11.10
Inishowen U13 League final

Burt...4-19

Naomh Pádraig...1-4

by Damian Dowds at The Carrick Field, Moville

BURT won the Inishowen U13 title on a rainy Friday night in Moville with a stunning second half display that made light of the difficult conditions. Burt led by just a point at half time, 1-4 to 1-3, and there had been nothing in the first half to suggest that the second half would be so one-sided. But playing down the slope and with the wind on their backs, Burt cut loose in the second half and ran out convincing winners.
Burt captain Kyle Long proudly accepted the League trophy from Inishowen Board chairman Gerard Callaghan afterwards, and paid warm tribute to the Naomh Pádraig team.
Indeed, Muff opened the scoring within moments of the first whistle when midfielder Ultan Doherty struck over from long range. Burt responded with a point from centre forward Tony Cregan and took the lead with a Stephen McCafferty goal. Two frees from midfielder Sean McHugh further stretched Burt’s lead but Muff hit back with a well-taken goal. Darren McColgan launched a long ball into the danger area and Darren Harkin hit it to the net.
Sam Duffy followed up with a point and, five minutes before the break, the sides were level when Ultan Doherty converted a ’45 at the
second attempt.
Playing down the slope and with the wind in their favour, Naomh Pádraig attacked in waves but couldn’t convert the many chances that came their way.
Driven on by McColgan and the midfield pairing of Ultan Doherty and Caolan Mailey, Muff ran and ran at the Burt defence, but a combination of good goalkeeping and well placed kickouts from Mark McElhinney and good defending from Tom Doherty, Denver Kelly and Conor Bradley, kept Muff at bay.
Mark Coyle was introduced to the Burt defence ten minutes before half time and grew in dominance as the game progressed. Another pointed free from Sean McHugh – who never missed from a placed ball all night – gave Burt that narrow half time lead.
Burt’s first score of the second half was a goal and they never looked back after it. Jonathan McDaid’s long ball in was punched to the net by Tony Cregan and quick fire points from McHugh (2) and Cregan had Burt further ahead before Ryan McLaughlin hit a goal after Kyle McGrath had broken a long ball down for him.
Despite the best efforts of Liam Toye and Patrick Canavan, Muff just couldn’t repel the relentless Burt onslaught. Caolan Mailey scored a free with ten minutes to go, but by that stage Burt were almost out of site. Ryan McLaughlin got their fourth goal just five minutes before the end when cracked an unstoppable shot past Shane Orr.
With Cregan, McHugh and Coyle all adding more points, the final scoreline was a bit harsh on Naomh Pádraig, but it capped off an unbeaten season in Inishowen for the Burt lads.
