Carn win county title 14.10.10
Under-14 boys have three points to spare over Red Hugh’s

Carndonagh...2-13

Red Hugh’s...2-10

CARNDONAGH added the County Division 2 title to their Northern Board title won three weeks earlier when they had three points to spare over Red Hugh’s in Muff on Saturday.
The game did not disappoint as both teams were evenly matched. Carn stared the game without regular players Declan Donaghey, Ryan Doherty and Mark Doherty (Paul), all of whom were out through injury.
Both teams had plenty of skilful players on display and the football was end-to-end stuff. Carn opened the scoring with points from Keith Norris and Dillon Ruddy. Red Hugh’s replied with two points and were putting a lot of pressure on the Carn defence. Fergal Doherty was a stalwart in the fullback line and any loose ball was quickly gathered by the two corner backs Brian McEleney and Eoin Kelly. During this period the Carn keeper Gavin McLaughlin brought off a number of great saves before the Red Hugh’s midfielder fisted a goal to put them in the lead. After this the Carn half back line of Mark Doherty, Danny Monagle and Darragh Browne together with midfielders Dillon Ruddy and Luke McLaughlin closed down the Red Hugh’s threat, playing some great football.
The Carn half forward line of Christopher McCormick, Thomas O’Sullivan and team captain Mathew McLaughlin were growing in confidence and it was not long before the scores came. Dillon Ruddy scored the third point and Christopher McCormick added a goal. The Carn full forward line of Fergal Bradley, Emmet Doherty and Ronan Doherty were rampant around the goal area and soon Emmet Doherty added the fourth point.
However, it was not all one way traffic as Red Hugh’s added points through their midfielder and centre half forward. But again and again Mathew McLaughlin jigged his way past the opposition. Toward the end of the first period he delivered a delightful pass to Ronan Doherty who skilfully shot wide of the keeper to score Carn’s second goal and then followed up with a point to give Carn a 2-6 to 1-6 half time lead.
In the second half Ronan Hartin came in for the injured Emmet Doherty who had contributed 2 points in the first half. Carn added 2more points (Mathew and Ronan Doherty) before Red Hugh’s scored a point. After this it was point for point until Red Hugh’s scored a goal to put just 2 points between the sides.
Breege Gallagher presents the cup to winning Carn captain, Mathew McLaughlin.
But Carn responded well, with substitute Ronan Hartin and Dillon Ruddy adding Carn’s ninth and tenth points respectively.
The 11th point for Carn was scored by centre half forward Thomas O’Sullivan who fielded some great ball over the hour. Liam Fox came on as a sub to score Carn’s 12 point and Thomas O’Sullivan had the last word when he pointed to make the final score 2-13 to 2-10.
The Cup was presented to winning Captain Mathew McLaughlin by Breege Gallagher. This Carn team have added the U14 Division county title to the county title they won at U13 level last year. Their reward will be a place in Division 1 competition at U15 next year, and they will also play in Division 1 at U16 in 2012. But on the evidence of these past two seasons, Carn will be more than capable of holding their own at the higher grade.
Carn: Gavin McLaughlin; Brian McEleney, Fergal Doherty, Eoin Kelly; Mark Doherty, Danny Monagle, Darragh Browne; Luke McLaughlin, Dillon Ruddy (0-3); Christopher McCormick (1-0), Thomas O’Sullivan (0-2), Mathew McLaughlin (0-1); Ronan Doherty (1-2), Fergal Bradley, Emmet Doherty (0-2).
