Clonmany Shamrocks...1
(P. Doherty ’53)

Aileach FC...1
(D. McGlynn ’57)

by Damian Dowds, Inishowen Independent, at Shamrock Park, Clonmany

CLONMANY and Aileach played out an entertaining draw at a sun-kissed Shamrock Park on Sunday afternoon. While the first half was high on endeavour, it was a little short on finesse and although Aileach had the better of the chances, the sides were scoreless at half time.
The second half was altogether more exciting, illuminated by two goals in five minutes. Midfielder Paddy Doherty gave the Shamrocks the lead on 53 minutes when he lofted the ball over a helpless Gerard Crossan, but Aileach hit back soon after when right back Dermot McGlynn rose to head a Mickey Feeney cross in off Peter Devlin’s right hand post.
It was end-to-end stuff for the final half hour, with both sides spurning chances to grab a winner. However, the draw was probably the fairest result as neither side did enough to win it.
Clonmany keeper Peter Devlin was the busier of the two keepers in the first half hour. He made a fine fingertip save in the first minute after Charlie McCormick had crossed for Anthony Doherty and the latter directed the ball goalwards.
With Ciaran Craig driving Aileach on from the centre of midfield, the visitors created a succession of chances before Clonmany got their first effort on target. Dermot McGlynn with a header, Gary Collett with a shot after cutting in from the left wing and Charlie McCormick all drew saves from Devlin before Steve Harkin headed straight at Gerard Crossan from a Michael Devlin free kick on 27 minutes.
Crossan had to dive full length to save from Jason Devlin on 33 minutes as Clonmany came strongly into the game; the home side had another chance five minutes before the break but Steve Harkin headed Jason Devlin’s
corner wide at the back post.
Charlie McCormick might have given Aileach the lead on 42 minutes, but his shot, from an Anthony Doherty endline cross that the Clonmany defence claimed had gone wide, skimmed the top of the crossbar with Peter Devlin beaten. McCormick had another half chance just before the break, but under pressure from Liam Hirrell headed wide and the half finished scoreless.
Aileach had a double chance within 60 seconds of the restart but Peter Devlin saved first from a Neil McElhinney header and then pulled off a superb save from Collett on the follow up.
The opening goal came eight minutes into the second half. Paddy Doherty, whose influence grew in the second half as Ciaran Craig’s waned, won the ball in central midfield, fed Steve Harkin and peeled off to the left. Under pressure from Mickey Feeney, Harkin’s shot was saved by Crossan but Doherty had followed up and chipped the ball over the prostrate keeper and into the net.
Clonmany held the lead for only four minutes; Dermot McGlynn capped his man-of-the-match performance when he rose to head Feeney’s cross in off Devlin’s left hand post.
Chances kept flying in at either end. Paddy Doherty shot over at one end before Ciaran Craig drew a full-length diving save from Devlin at the other. Substitute Brendan Devlin latched onto a through ball on 68 minutes but Crossan saved with his shin, while at the other end Gary Collett beat the offside trap but fluffed his shot when one-on-one with Devlin.
Collett had an even better chance five minutes before the end but he headed over from close range when unmarked.
The referee waved away Clonmany appeals for a penalty on 80 minutes, before Brendan Devlin again went close when he headed inches wide from a Mark McLaughlin cross five minutes before the end.
