PADDY Hannon’s Greencastle underlined their status as the best ladies team in Inishowen by securing the League Cup with an impressive win over Carn last Saturday night.
Under the lights at Gleneely, the Greencastle girls, who were made to fight all the way by a capable Carn outfit, dazzled their way to a 3-0 win thanks to goals by players of the match, Niamh Hegarty and Gemma McGuinness.
Though Carn enjoyed long periods of possession, it was the league champions, Greencastle who looked the more threatening in attack; with Hegarty and McGuinness in particularly devastating form.
Playing to a high standard in front of a crowd of 100, Carn will take many positives from the game but too many of their attacks petered out in the final third and they failed to create enough chances to really trouble Greencastle keeper Sarah Faulkner.
The Carn girls began on the front foot with Georgina Gordon and Denise Dohery combining to trouble the Greencastle defence, which was well-marshalled by Geraldine Harkin.
Greencastle took the lead with their first real attack when Niamh Hegarty gathered Gemma McGuinness’ superb pass before racing clear of the Carn defence and slotting the ball into the corner of the net.
Niamh Hegarty then teamed up with sister Ciara before firing a shot goalwards, which was well saved by Carn keeper Fiona Doherty.
At the other end a Denise Doherty attempt was well blocked by Greencastle midfielder Loirin Melarkey before Doherty set-up Janine Doherty, who was crowded out by a
trio of defenders.
With Georgina Gordon and Deirdre Foley controlling the ball in midfield, Carn retained more of the possession but it was Greencastle who looked the more threatening going forward.
The second-half began with a good spell of Carn pressure with substitutes Kayla Farren and Treasa Doherty causing problems for the Greencastle rearguard. Farren’s shot, comfortably saved by Sarah Faulkner, was the Carn girls’ first clear cut attempt.
An incisive break by Carn winiger Deirdre Foley led to a free-kick on the edge of area but Rosie McColgan blasted her attempt high over Faulkner’s crossbar.
Carn striker Denise Doherty then embarked on a good solo run but again the Greencastle defence was alive to the danger.
Midway through the second-half Greencastle capitalised on Carn’s missed chances when Gemma McGuinness and Niamh Hegarty crafted a second goal for the league champions. Again a superb McGuinness through ball was confidently stroked home by Hegarty, who never looked like missing.
The goal knocked the stuffing out of the Carn girls and they were three down soon after when Hegarty turned provider to set-up McGuinness, who side-footed the ball into the bottom corner of the Carn net from twelve yards.
Minutes later and the Greencastle girls were presented with the League Cup trophy to add to the league title, secured earlier in the summer. The 3-0 scoreline was harsh on George Gordon’s Carn players, who were in the game until the last fifteen minutes.
