Glengad boxer makes pro debut 30.08.10

by Chris McNulty

GLENGAD boxer Michael McLaughlin makes his professional debut on 2 October when he fights on the undercard to Paul McCloskey's European title defence in Letterkenny.
Dubliner Gavin Prunty appears the likely opponent for former Carndonagh BC puncher McLaughlin at the 2,000 capacity Aura Leisure Centre.
“The sparring is really intense at the moment, so by the time the fight comes around I’ll be super fit - as fit as I’ve been in my life - so I’m looking forward to it,” he told the Inishowen Independent last week at a press conference in Derry to launch the big fight night.
The night is part of the Hunky Dorys Fight Night series, hosted by top Irish boxing promoter Brian Peters.
McLaughlin said: “The fight couldn’t be in a better place than Letterkenny. I can’t wait for it.”
He has had 100 fights at amateur level and won an Irish Intermediate title three years ago.
Having returned from Australia in December, he’s joined John Breen’s famed gym. He said: “I’m training flat out. John Breen’s gym is one of the best in the world.

I’m in there learning all the time from guys who are better boxers than me. Sometimes you get beat up in sparring, but you’re learning all the time and that’s the most important thing.”
It's a historic night in more ways than one as Championship Boxing comes to Donegal for the first time.
In the headline act, Dungiven’s Paul McCloskey defends his European Light Welterweight title against Barry Morrison.
It will be the second defence of the title for the unbeaten Dungiven southpaw. Last November he beat Spaniard Daniel Rasilla to claim the vacant belt and in June he successfully defended the title with an 11th round knock out of Italian Giuseppe Lauri at The King’s Hall in Belfast.
This will be McCloskey’s second fight in Letterkenny - in 2008, he defeated former World Champion Cezar Bazan at the Clanree Hotel.
Tickets for the Hunky Dorys Fight Night priced from €40 go on sale from 9am on Wednesday, September 1st from www.Ticketmaster.ie / 0818 719300, The Aura, Letterkenny: 074 9106422, The Radisson Blu, Letterkenny: 074 9194444, Eurospar, Dungiven: 028 77741245 or Julie, Dungiven: 07745 698372.
