Goals pave way for Burt victory 19.08.10
Junior A Football Championship – preliminary round play-off

Burt...3-7

Robert Emmet’s...0-7

by Damian Dowds, Inishowen Independent, at O’Donnell Park

BURT overcame Robert Emmet’s in the preliminary round play-off in O’Donnell Park on Sunday evening. Ronan McLaughlin and Benny McDermott’s side had nine points to spare over the 2008 Junior finalists and the win sets up a two-legged first round meeting with Naomh Ultan.
It was the goals that made the difference. Burt got three and might have had a few more, while the Castlefin side struggled to create goal chances and on the few occasions they did, they couldn’t find a way past Ciaran McDermott.
Joe Boyle had converted two frees on either side of a Sean Coyle point early on, and Burt’s first goal came after ten minutes. The Emmet’s defence looked to have snuffed out a Burt attack, but full back O’Doherty lost possession under pressure from Enda McDermott and Ciaran Dowds stroked the loose ball into the bottom left corner from just inside the parallelogram.
Joe Boyle pointed a free between then and the next goal, which came in the 16th minute. It, too, was a bit scrappy. Mark McGavigan drove a long ball into the square that Enda McDermott collected. He goaled at the second attempt after keeper Simon McMenamin had parried his first attempt.
Those two goals put Burt 2-3 to 0-1 ahead and they dominated the remainder of the half, without quite making it tell on the scoreboard. Paul McHugh pointed from the right after being set up by Benny Harrigan, and it took until the 25th minute for Robert Emmet’s to double their tally when Niall McConnell converted a 13m free.
Emmet’s were reduced to 14 men when centre half back Michael McGlinchey picked up a second yellow card and Burt dropped their extra man back into defence to further hinder Castlefin attacks. McConnell added another free just before the break but Burt had the last word, Mark McGavigan setting up Brian Sheerin for a point to give Burt a 2-5 to 0-3 half-time lead.
The start of the second half was scrappy, with no score registered until 19 minutes in. Ciaran McDermott made a good save from Paul McCauley in the second minute, but other than referee Pat Walsh flashing a series of yellow cards, there wasn’t much to cheer about. Burt were reduced to 14 men when Martin Donaghy got his second yellow card midway through the half.
The second half deadlock was finally broken when Brian Sheerin set up Dara Grant for a well taken point from 30 metres. And within moments, Dean McBrearty had responded with a point for the Castlefin side – it was almost as if one side was waiting on the other to score before doing so themselves.
Robert Emmet’s needed a goal, but it never really looked like coming. Instead, it was Burt who got it, Brian Sheerin applying the coup de grace in the 57th minute when he crashed an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net to put his side 3-6 to 0-5 ahead.
Emmet’s added two further pointed frees from Michael Lafferty and Niall McConnell, and it was Burt substitute Michael McHugh who got the last score, a 25m point to seal progress to the first round of the Junior Championship proper.
Burt are back on hurling duty next Saturday when they face Sean Mac Cumhaill’s in the County Semi-Final, after that, they’ll play Naomh Ultan over two legs in the first round of the Junior Football championship.
