Urris...0-8

Naomh Mhuire...0-6

By Damian Dowds, Inishowen Independent, at Straid, Clonmany

URRIS opened their season with a fine 0-8 to 0-6 win over Naomh Mhuire at Straid on Sunday. The foundations of their win was built on a rousing first half display, where they blitzed a poor looking Naomh Mhuire and they led by 0-7 to 0-2 at half time. However, in a swirling wind and the home team tiring, Naomh Mhuire swept back into it in the second half, reducing the deficit to just a point with five minutes remaining. Having earlier missed a penalty, Rocky Ivers showed steady nerves to convert a 56th minute free, Urris’ only score of the second half, and take the sting from Naomh Mhuire.
Points from Sean Paul Doherty and Eddie Kelly had Urris two clear early on, but Paul Boyle and Ciaran McGinley drew Naomh Mhuire level with points in the 10th and 11th minutes. But that was the last time they bothered the scorekeepers for the remainder of the half, in fact, they went a further 32 minutes without adding to their tally.
Urris dominated the remainder of the first half, with Liam Diver and Brian Kelly, and especially county panellist Eddie Kelly, pulling the strings. Eddie Kelly converted five unanswered frees from a variety of angles to give Urris a 0-7 to 0-2 half time lead. At corner back, Barney Friel had the measure of Harry Harden, Naomh Mhuire’s rising star and a member of Charlie Mulgrew’s county minor football team.
The early stages of the second half were scrappy, enlivened only by a 38th minute penalty won by Brian Kelly after he drove through the heart of the Naomh Mhuire defence. Rocky Ivers struck the penalty well, but Sean Gallagher got down smartly to his left to put the ball out for a 45.
The save lifted Naomh Mhuire and that, combined
with Urris running out of steam, saw the visitors pull closer as the half progressed. Urris retreated into defensive mode, drawing their forwards back into their own half as they tried to crowd out their opponents. It was successful to a degree, but something of a double-edged sword. Points from Naomh Mhuire half backs Paul Boyle and Brian Gillespie swung the momentum towards the visitors, and two Ciaran McGinley frees, reduced the deficit to just a single point, 0-7 to 0-6, with five minutes remaining.
However, a 56th minute Rocky Ivers’ free from the left wing, Urris’ only score the second half, steadied their ship and the home side survived a couple of late goal attempts to get their season off to a winning start.
