by Chris McNulty, Inishowen Independent

DONEGAL Sports Star of the Year for 2009, William McLaughlin, was recently crowned Ulster Champion at the Sport NI Ulster Elite Boxing Championship Finals in Belfast.
The Illies Golden Gloves man didn't keep Niall McGinley from Bishop Kelly BC in the ring too long. The welterweight decider was all over inside the first round when McGinley received a standing count from the referee and McLaughlin was confirmed the winner.
McLaughlin will set out at the end of this month to defend his National Seniors title and is also considering turning professional.
"I have received a number of offers and a number of professional promoters have been in touch," McLaughlin said.
"It is fair to say it is something I am considering and I am giving it some thought. But it is something I am not going to rush into."
Team-mate Tyrone McCullagh suffered a 7-6 countback defeat against Immaculata's Ryan Lindbery in the Bantamweight final. A bad error from the timekeeper in the final round marred this

cagey decider, the bell going after just 2 minutes 15 seconds. This meant the fighters had to resume the final 45 seconds. McCullagh had led 3-1 at the first, but didn't score thereafter in the next six minutes.
