John’s swim for kidney patients 06.07.10

by Eamonn MacDermott, Inishowen Independent

CLONMANY man John Francis Doherty will be attempting to swim the three miles between Glashedy Island into Tullagh Point on August 7 to raise funds for the Irish Kidney Association.
John will be doing his swim as part of the Clonmany Festival and his motivation stems from the fact his father Patsy received a kidney transplant over six years ago.
John said: “I am in training at the minute and just this morning I was in the pool doing a mile and a quarter.
“I have also been in the Irish Sea so I am slowly but surely building up for August.”
John said he does not anticipate any problems with the tide during the swim. He said: “I think it should take me about two and a half hours to complete the swim.

“I am in a scuba diving club here in Dublin where I now live and some of the members of that club plus the club boat will be in attendance.
“The RNLI are also due to be there to cover the raft race that is also part of the festival.
“I am also hoping that we will have a kayak in the water as well so we should be well covered.”
John, as well as being a member of the scuba diving club, has also run marathons.
He completed both the Berlin Marathon and the Paris Marathon so he will be no stranger to the
