Fund to enhance Donegal's public spaces 19.03.14

INISHOWEN community groups have been urged to apply for a share of a fund that will help enhance public spaces ahead of the tourism season.
Donegal County Council has been allocated €105,000 of a €3m central government public area enhancement fund.
This additional, once-off money is being provided to support local authorities’ efforts to prepare and maintain public areas for residents and visitors to local towns and villages.
Tidy Towns efforts, improvement works to public parks and walkways, cleaning and tidying of older graveyards and tidying up derelict buildings are some examples of work that could be done under the scheme.
All work undertaken should be additional to work already planned and must also be supplemented with 25 per cent match funding from the County Council. It must also be undertaken in co-operation with community-based groups.
Labour councillor Martin Farren urged local community groups to contact the council with their ideas.
“Given the widespread storm damage to our tourist areas, voluntary community groups need all the help they can get to restore and enhance our local environment. This scheme could add little flourishes to repair works that would optimise the value for money we can get from the repairs.”
