Donegal health services "stripped of €27m" 17.02.12

SOME €27 million will be stripped from the health service in Co Donegal under rationalisation plans by the HSE, Sinn Féin has warned.
Deputy Pearse Doherty was reacting to today's "severe cuts" in the HSE West service plan including proposals on the future of Lifford Community Hospital.
“Today's HSE service plan for the western region sees €27 million being taken out of our health service across Donegal, with specific reference to the rationalisation of Lifford Community nursing home, which could see 20 beds being axed under this plan," said Deputy Doherty.
"This Government like the last has ignored the voices of the people when they took to the streets in their thousands demanding that our community hospitals remain open, and our health services are cut no further."
It was announced today that a public consultation would be held on the future of Lifford Hospital beginning on March 1.
Deputy Pearse Doherty.
Closure is one proposal however it is understood options for keeping the hospital open will also be explored.
Deputy Doherty said thousands of home help hours in the county had been reduced while Letterkenny General Hospital had been "stripped to the bone". He said there was a "real possibility" of key services being taken away from Letterkenny.
“I would urge the people of Donegal to stand together on this issue, to speak with one voice and fight these cuts," he added.
