Culdaff went top of the Reserve First Division with a narrow victory over Carrowmena thanks to a solitary Derek Doherty at Tremone on Sunday morning.
The league leaders were made to fight all the way for the three points by a determined home side though.
The visitors were first to show when David O’Connor found space to drill a low shot just wide of Carrowmenagh keeper Mark Doherty’s right hand post.
The home team upped the pace then and Mark McGonigle fired over from the edge of the area before Samuel Bredin fired narrowly wide. James McDermott then blazed over the top before at the other end Derek Doherty fired just over from the edge of the area.
Culdaff went close again on 31 minutes when Martin McGrenaghan’s powerful header was brilliantly saved by Doherty diving to his right. Before the break Gerard Gill for the home side had a crisp 25-yards effort well saved low to his right by George Houten.
The visitors hit the crucial goal on 55 minutes after Declan Noone released Derek Doherty to fire a low shot from fifteen yards past Doherty.
Carrowmena responded and Gill had an effort saved by Houten before the same player had a free kick well saved.
Culdaff were reduced to ten men on 85 minutes after O’Connor was red-carded for a second bookable offence.
In the final minute the visitors almost added a second but Patrick McGrenaghan’s effort was cleared off the line by Jason Crumlish.
Carrowmena will hope to bounce back from last Sunday’s narrow loss when they host Redcastle this weekend while the Culdaff second stringers continue their promotion push at St. Egney’s Park, Dunree.
