Malin, Muff and Burt in crunch ties 17.11.11

Promotion, relegation and Ulster title to be decided on Sunday

It may be mid-November, but this is one of the most crucial weekends of the season for local GAA clubs with Malin, Muff and Burt all facing into crunch games.
Malin face the daunting task of a Division 1 relegation play-off against county champions Glenswilly (Mac Cumhaill Park, Sunday 2.30pm).
“The prize is there for us and the best team on the day will stay in Division One,” Malin manager Danny Lafferty said.
“We would have taken this opportunity at the start of the season for sure – to have the chance to win one game to stay up.”
“It won’t be easy but the boys are in great shape and they need no motivation for this one.
Malin defeated Glenswilly in the All-County League last month, a game which Laffery thinks will have little or no bearing on this Sunday’s fixture.
“That game was played a few days after Glenswilly won the County Final; it will have no impact on this weekend’s match,” he added.
Meanwhile, Naomh Pádraig Iskaheen will play Naomh Pádraig Lifford in the Division 4 promotion play-off in O’Donnell Park on Sunday (throw-in 2.30pm).
Aiden McAleer’s drew with Lifford last week, and results elsewhere means that the sides must meet again to decide who will be promoted to Division 3 next season.
“I suppose we have surprised ourselves this year with the quality of our squad given how badly we’ve been hit with emigration,” McAleer said.
“The boys have worked very hard and we’d like to cap off the season by getting promotion. We know we’d be capable of holding our own in Division 3 and we’d like the opportunity to test ourselves against those teams.”
“Lifford are very tough opponents and last week’s game was physical but fair. Sunday will be like a championship final, with the winner taking all.”
Finally, Burt’s Ulster football ambitions may have been dashed last weekend, but their hurlers can capture the provincial junior title on Sunday when they face Creggan Kickham’s of Antrim in a replay.
The sides drew ten points apiece in Clones last Sunday week, although Burt know they have plenty of scope for improvement. The game is fixed for the Athletic Grounds in Armagh and throw-in is at 12.45pm.
