Urris...0-11

Carn...1-9

by Damian Dowds, Inishowen Independent, at Crampsey Park, Straid

RELEGATION threatened Carn secured just their second win of the season when they beat neighbours Urris in sunny Clonmany on Sunday.
A punched goal from Cathal O’Kane midway through the second half helped the Carn men to their first win, in league or championship, since they defeated Naomh Colmcille at the start of April. John Gibbon’s team had gone ten games without a win, although the improved from they’d shown against Aodh Ruadh and Naomh Mhuire in recent weeks finally came good against their closest rivals.
Urris were wasteful in the extreme, hitting 16 wides over of the hour and many of them from decent scoring positions.
With Alan Friel their main scoring threat, Urris had the benefit of a stiff breeze in the first half, but failed to convert their superior possession onto the scoreboard.
Two early Alan Friel frees for Urris were cancelled out by points from play by Cathal O’Kane and the impressive Rory Ward. Dara Doherty put Urris 0-3 to 0-2 ahead midway through the half when he pointed after referee Tony Gallagher had allowed a good advantage to accrue to the home team, but Ward once again hit back for Carn.
Carn took the lead for the first time in a bizarre fashion. Gerard Doherty launched a long ball in from near the sideline some 40 yards out and it was allowed to bounce in the square and over the bar.
While only 20 minutes were on the clock when Kinnego’s point went over, the final margin was just a single score and the Urris defence and keeper Peter Devlin will rue letting that ball bounce over the bar.
Urris tried to hit back and they almost found the met just two minutes later. Alan Friel once again was the source as he collected a long pass, sidestepped Michael Nelson and shot past Gerard Crossan only to see the ball ricochet off the right hand post and be clawed away for a 45, which Urris failed to convert.
Friel drew Urris level on 24 minutes when he pointed from the right corner after Donal Kelly had supplied the pass. For all Urris’ wides, Carn too were guilty of some bad misses.
Regular free taker Donnacha Gallagher had a complete off day, and he missed three long range frees in the five minutes before half time, frees that would normally be meat and drink to him.
The second half was much more entertaining with Friel opening the scoring for the home side within moments of the restart, followed by the first of five second half points from Eddie Kelly.
Oliver McConalogue, O’Kane and Ryan Davenport all got on the scoreboard for Carn who trailed by 0-9 to 0-7 with 50 minutes gone before they struck the decisive score.
Substitute Dominic Doherty kicked in a long free that O’Kane somehow beat the Urris defence to and punched it to the net.
While Urris drew level immediately through another Alan Friel point, Carn tacked on points from Fergal Matthews and Pádraig Doherty to lead by two as the game went into injury time.
Eddie Kelly converted a 62nd minute free, and Urris had one last chance snuffed out by the Carn defence as the visitors held on for a victory loudly acclaimed by their supporters.
