Premier Division
St. Mary’s 2, Greencastle 11
Greencastle started the scoring, with a run from Ciara
Hegarty, who passed the ball through to Niamh McLaughlin
to score from close range. St. Mary’s fought back,
scoring an equaliser from Bernie Grant with a superb
shot from out wide. St. Mary’s had another shot denied
by Colleen Kearney before Greencastle attacked with
Niamh Hegarty, who made it 2-1. Good tackling in the St.
Mary’s defence from Amy McCarron and Kim McDaid kept the
score down. Greencastle added another from Niamh Hegarty
and when St. Mary’s attacked with the ball just minutes
later, Theresa E Doherty and Bernie Grant had good link
up play to set up Maria Harkin who scored a superb
volley to make the score 3-2. Greencastle added another
goal with good defensive play from Aisling McDermott to
link up with Niamh McLaughlin who played well up front.
Greencastle started the better side and finished the
game the stronger team. Greencastle added another three
goals each from Niamh McLaughlin and Ciara Hegarty.
Michelle Hands in the St. Mary’s defence made no
mistakes clearing the ball on numerous occasions. With
minutes to go Greencastle piled on the pressure adding
another two goals from Marie Kelly and Loirin Melarkey.
First Division
Dunree 1, Culdaff 2
Dunree had the better of the exchanges early in the
first half but for all their good football they wasted
their chances with wayward finishing. Culdaff came more
into the game and had a few opportunities but Patricia
McLaughlin defended well. Denise Farren picked up a
loose ball in the middle of the park, her through ball
sent Clare McLaughlin away and her unstoppable shot from
just outside the box, nestled in the top right hand
corner of the net. The second half had the same pattern
as the first, with Dunree still dominating the early
exchanges but, again their finishing, let them down.
Clare McLaughlin scored her second when she sprinted
down the right, turned a defender and fired low to the
goalkeeper’s right-hand side. For the rest of the game,
play was mostly bogged down in midfield with both
defences on top.
Aileach 9, Moville 1
Aileach hit the front after five minutes when Rosina
Lynch threaded a great ball between the Moville full
back and centre back which set Emma Breslin clear on the
right and she unleashed a great shot to the roof of the
net off the underside of the bar. Aileach made it two on
20 minutes when they forced a corner on the left which,
was swung directly into the net by Emma Breslin. Aileach
made it three on thirty minutes when a great through
ball from Olivia Devlin again found Emma Breslin who
completed her hat-trick with a neat finish from twelve
yards. On 35 minutes they made it four when a quick
corner was played out to the edge of the box to the
advancing Natasha Craig who fired home from 25 yards.
Minutes before half-time Aideen McGrory found Shona
McGrory on the edge of the Moville box and she turned
and fired a great shot low to the corner. Aileach made
it six on 43 minutes when Emma Breslin cut in from the
right and beat 2 players before firing home. On 47
minutes a good run down the left by Paula O’Donnell saw
her release Niamh Devlin who calmly found the bottom
corner to make it seven. On 57 minutes a similar attack
on the right saw Martina Bradley release Emma Breslin
who slotted home for her fifth and Aileach’s eighth goal
of the night. A long clearance out of defence found
Moville’s Orla Farren on the right, who turned neatly
passed two players and played a great ball which, set
Debbie McDaid through on goal and she stroked the ball
home. Aileach completed the scoring on 71 minutes when
Shona McGrory chipped in.
Cockhill 7, Sea Rovers 1
The match had started on a dry evening, but soon the
rain was lashing and John Quinn for one was not enjoying
the ‘very wet rain’ in the home dugout, especially since
the prevailing wind was blowing the rain straight in the
dugout! According to Martin O Donnell it was
‘horrendous’. Wet enough for some younger supporters to
arrive it wellies! Louise Porter opened the scoring for
the home side. Shortly after Emma O’Donnell brought the
ball the whole way up the side of the pitch before her
attempt at goal was deflected by a defender and put out
for a corner. The well-taken corner resulted in Louise
Porter heading the ball right into the back of the net.
Megan Doherty then got the first and only score of the
night for Sea Rovers before celebrating in the usual Sea
Rovers style . . . . planking! Cockhill had several more
shots and at one stage had four efforts without the ball
leaving the keeper’s six-yard box.
Maria Browne then got her name on the score sheet for
the girls in green and white. Shortly after Caroline
Gallagher beat a player before hitting a great strike
from forty yards out to put Cockhill even further ahead.
Louise Porter then got her third goal of the half. Niamh
McGlynn hit a super shot into the top corner to be
denied by the Rovers’ keeper. At halftime Martin Quinn’s
Cockhill girls led 5-1. The next goal came through a
corner which was headed into the net by Niamh McGlynn.
The last goal of the evening went to Maria Browne. |
