AN injury time point from substitute Dara Doherty secured a narrow win for Urris over local rivals Burt at Straid on Saturday.
In a scrappy low-scoring encounter neither side led by more than one point all evening but Burt will wonder how they left Clonmany empty-handed after dominating for long periods, particularly in the second-half.
The visitors, who were reduced to fourteen men late on, kicked a succession of panicky wides from poor positions late on and were ultimately made to pay by Urris subs, Paddy and Dara Doherty.
Three inspirational frees from the left boot of Eddie Kelly gave Urris a platform for victory while Joe Boyle was in the groove for Burt, kicking five points, including three sumptuous scores from open play.
The hard-earned victory keeps Urris in the early promotion hunt, just two points behind Naomh Mhuire at the top of Division Three while Burt continue to search for their first win of the campaign.
After early sparring Urris half-forward Mickey Grant burst forward before feeding Martin Kelly to expertly clip the game’s opening score after eight minutes with a neat finish from 25 metres.
At the other end Burt’s Paddy McDermott fizzed wide under pressure from a tight angle before the same player’s high effort was brilliantly gathered and cleared by Urris midfielder Liam Diver.
The south Inishowen men drew level moments later when roving forward Joe Boyle put the finishing touch to a fantastic flowing move involving Burt trio, Kevin McDermott, Darragh Grant and Enda McDermott.
Urris had a penalty appeal waved away midway through the opening period when Mark McLaughlin went to ground in the square under the challenge of Burt back Paul O’Brien before Sean McDaid fired the home side ahead following excellent foraging by corner-forward Eddie Kelly.
The visitors were behind for less than a minute before Joe Boyle kicked over an equalising free from 40 metres after Ciaran Dowds was impeded.
Talented Urris half-back Sean McDaid kicked wide following good work by Mark McLaughlin and Martin Kelly before Darren Grant fisted the Straid men into a third first-half lead after connecting with McLaughlin’s long-range effort.
A Joe Boyle free drew Burt level yet again before Rory Grant kicked the visitors into the lead for the first time with a stunning score from the right-hand touchline following quickfire combination between Joe Boyle and Enda McDermott.
With the last action of a scrappy period Urris almost struck for a vital goal but Micky Grant’s effort was superbly saved by Burt keeper Ciaran McDermott.
The second-half was less than three minutes old when parity was predictably restored. Urris corner-forward Eddie Kelly engineered a 45 off Burt’s Paul O’Brien with Mark McLaughlin firing over to make it 0-4 apiece.
Donal Kelly then gathered a mis-hit Eddie Kelly free before holding off his man and swivelling to kick Urris into another lead before the visitors were back in business soon after.
A flowing Burt move involving Enda McDermott, Benny Harrigan and Dara Grant saw Joe Boyle earn a free which Paddy McDermott clipped over from distance.
Impressive forward Joe Boyle scored from a 45 to put Burt one up again before Urris’ Eddie Kelly found his shooting boots with two massive frees from almost 50 metres.
Substitutes Niall Campbell and Michael McHugh combined to set-up Christy McDermott for a levelling score before Urris talisman Kelly struck for another fantastic free as the home team hit the front again.
With less than fifteen minutes remaining dominant Burt hungrily sought an equaliser but a series of poor shooting options resulted in a succession of wides.
Joe Boyle was off-target with three efforts from varying degrees of difficult angles before Ciaran Dowds fired wide under pressure after a marauding run forward.
Dowds followed up with another sideline effort which flew narrowly wide before Joe Boyle collected Niall Campbell’s pass and kicked the sides level for an eighth straight time with a magnificent effort from right corner-field in the last minute.
Rather than build on their momentum, Burt were hit with a sucker punch in injury time when Paddy Doherty set-up fellow Urris substitute Dara Doherty to tap over for the narrowiest of home victories.
To further compound Burt’s misery, midfielder Ciaran Dowds was sent off after picking up a second yellow for an errant elbow.
