Misfits on the road again 24.02.11

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

A GROUP of enthusiastic amateur bikers from Inishowen are gearing up for their fourth annual charity run next month.
Members of burgeoning motorcycle group, the Misfits, will grab the handlebars on March 13 next before embarking on a 180-mile round trip from Moville to Bloody Foreland and Greencastle.
Raising funds for the RNLI this time out, the popular group is currently selling tickets, at €20 each, with a host of top prizes, including two 125cc scooters, up for grabs.
The motley crew, which started as a ‘wee bit of fun’ three years ago, has already raised more than €30,000 for vital local organisations like the Donegal and Foyle Hospices and Inishowen Special Needs.
One of the organisers of the Misfits’ outing, Eddie Kelly, said the annual trip has proved an outstanding success.
“Mickey McCormick, Eoin Doyle and I were sitting at a house party one night when we decided to round up a number of boys with bikes for a run. My wife Brigid then suggested that we should do it for charity,” he said.
“It was supposed to be a one-off but it ended up being so successful that we have kept it going over the years. We were only doing it for a bit of craic and a day out, so we couldn’t believe it when we raised more than €14,000 the first year.”

Eddie said this year’s beneficiary, the RNLI, was a very worthy charity and extremely important to people in the North-West.
“There have been a number of recent tragedies and the lifeboat has been very active so we thought we should support the RNLI this year,” he said.
With up to 50 bikers expected to gather in the Square, Moville, on Sunday fortnight, Eddie revealed that the Misfits are planning a more ambitious trip next year.
“We are thinking of spreading our wings a bit further next year and maybe doing an international trip to Lake Garda in Italy for a cross-border charity like Children in Crossfire,” he added.
This year’s annual motorcycle rally - which will include a "couple of pit-stops for breakfast and lunch" - will be followed by a night of food, drink and music in Kealey’s Bar, Greencastle, where Margaret’s stew and bread traditionally go down a treat with the hungry bikers!
