Buncrana children in rubbish musical 10.06.11

SCHOOLCHILDREN in Buncrana are not embarrassed to say they've taken part in a rubbish musical. That's because the show is all about keeping their environment clean and healthy for everyone in the community. The new musical 'Environment - The Show' brought together a cast of 34 young stars from fourth class in Scoil Iosagain and fourth and fifth classes in St. Mura’s National School, Buncrana.
The full cast of Environment the Show.
Directed by Annette McNelis and co-directed by Nicola McLaughlin of Masquerade Stage School and Scoil Iosagain class teacher, Grainne Kelly, the young group performed four shows over two days, entertaining and educating young and old alike. Musical direction was by Lorna McLaughlin of the Henry Girls. Annette was commissioned four years ago to write the songs for the musical – a joint partnership project between Donegal County Council's Cultural Services department and Donegal VEC's Music Education Partnership project.
L-R: Catriona Bradley, artist; Nicola McLaughlin, director; Annette McNelis, producer/director; Lorna McLaughlin, musical director; Grainne Kelly, director.
A CD of the songs was launched as a classroom resource last year in the Donegal Education Centre. The songs, together with two new ones, deal with littering, recycling, personal responsibility for caring for our environment, dog fouling and volunteering for Tidy Towns.
'Environment - The Show' is brought to life with a new script introducing the audience to characters from two fictional places - Messview Park and Greenway. The set, created by Buncrana artist Catriona Bradley, is made entirely from waste material and recycled plastic and is adaptable to suit any performance space so a stage is not necessary for performances.
The aim of the project is to give a classroom of children the opportunity to be part of a serious production as singers, actors, dancers or stage crew. Annette intends to take the show to as many schools as possible in the future. Enquiries to annettemcnelis@gmail.com . Tel 0879264448 or 074 9361424
