200 athletes set for Burt 07.10.11

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

UP TO 200 athletes will descend on Burt this Sunday for a cross-country event in the Donegal Novice Championship series.
With runners set to arrive in the peninsula from all over the county, this is the first time that Inishowen AC has hosted such a marquee event.
With the action set to get underway in the field beside the local GAA pitch at 11am, one of the organisers, Seamus McDaid said it was a huge honour for the local club.
“This is the first time we’ve taken on such an event and hopefully there will be a large crowd of spectators as we don’t usually see cross-country meetings here in Inishowen. Some of the top talent in Donegal will be on show and if things go well this weekend we could host Ulster or All-Ireland events in the futures,” he said.
“We have been planning all week, marking out the course and we think it will prove a good challenge to the athletes. The going will be heavy and it will take a lot out of the competitors,” Seamus added.
Turning to the possibility of some Inishowen success, Seamus said local athletes could well be among the medals come Sunday evening.
“The Inishowen ladies team is definitely in with a shout of team gold this weekend and they could do well in the individuals too. For the men, it will be more of an uphill battle,” Seamus added. Cross-country racing begins in Burt on Sunday at 11am.
